Danny Malin: 'I’m touring across America - but there’s one British meal I can’t stop craving'

Danny is travelling across the US on his food tour

I’m almost halfway through my USA tour, which started in NYC and finishes in LA.

Despite having visited one of the best steakhouses in the world in Texas, a KFC buffet in Oklahoma, and now preparing to review restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip, there are certain parts of British culinary culture that I always miss on my travels.

Our pub grub culture is second to none. I don’t even drink alcohol, but you get some of the heartiest food at independent pubs.

Before I left, I filmed reviews for my Danny Vs Food YouTube channel at The Old Post Office in Barnsley which does a banging mixed grill.

I also went to The Tan Hill Inn for the first time - the highest pub in England.

Here they serve their own ale, lager, stout, gin, and rum. As ever, I was here for food though.

I had to try their famous giant Yorkshire pudding filled with meat, mash, vegetables and gravy.

You can't get this meal done right anywhere but in the UK.

The homemade Yorkshire was like a dream. Nice and crisp and fluffy on the inside.

You get a choice of locally sourced meat, so I went for the lamb. It was cooked to perfection. I had lots of chunks of lamb, amazing. The mash was nice and creamy, but the star of the show was the Yorkshire pudding.

You cannot beat a roast dinner and whenever I’m travelling, that’s what I miss most, especially Yorkshires.

I know that’s one of the first meals I’ll be eating when I get home.

Obviously I’m not expecting a good chippy tea here either, but that being said, I don’t crave fish and chips like I do a roast.

I’m also kicking myself for not bringing a travel kettle and Yorkshire Tea to have while I’m abroad.

The home comforts I crave in particular are Asda gravy granules, M&S chopped fruit and toast using thickly sliced Kingsmill white bread with lashings of Lurpak.

I really am a fan of Fox’s biscuits too, but I can’t have them in the house anymore as I could eat a full packet.

As for roast dinner, that’s the one thing you can never replicate away from home.
