Danny Malin: 'I don't eat a lot despite reviewing restaurants - but here's what I do love off-duty'

From thick gravy to brunch in Leeds - this is where you’ll find Danny eating off-duty

A lot of people ask me what I eat when I’m not reviewing restaurants, cafes and takeaways.

The truth is I don’t eat a lot, but I do enjoy what I have.

At home, my wife mainly cooks and my absolute favourite meal is a roast dinner. The best part is the meat from the butchers, homemade roast potatoes, marrow fat peas and cheap stuffing. I love Asda gravy, which I enjoy so thick that you can stand a fork in it.

For a takeaway, Abdul’s in Wakefield is my go to Indian locally. if you can bake fresh naans, wraps or any bread to perfection, I’m a customer for life.

We’ve also had several special occasions to celebrate recently, too, which means we’ve been eating out a fair bit.

We tried Rinaldis in Wakefield for an Italian meal and it was spot on. Again, fresh pasta is a winner for me - basically I’m a carb and meat man.

My mum and dad recently joined me at Packhorse Kitchen in Huddersfield to try our new vendor, Firewood Suya.

It’s fair to say they blew us away with their spice but also flavours that pack a punch. They serve up West African food - spicy meat skewers of meat cooked over a flame in a box with Jollof rice, and salad with their famous Black Star sauce.

For a treat breakfast or brunch, I love Laynes in Leeds or Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley. So much so, I took Kalani the Ghosthunter to Cannon Hall Farm, and Gary Eats to Laynes for their food reviews.

Our go-to place to eat out on an evening with friends or family is Three Flames in Wakefield.

When I’m reviewing, there are also several places where I know I want to return to fully enjoy the experience.

For fish and chips inland, I always recommend George a Greens and Kingfisher’s in Wakefield. So when taking my pal Phil, who now lives in USA, and his family out for a meal, he was dying for a proper chippy fix. We ate inside the dining area at Kingfisher. We of course washed our fish and chips down with dandelion and burdock and pots of tea.

A new favourite of mine is Wensleydale Heifer, which serves the best fish and chips I’ve had inside a restaurant. My mate Gary Eats and I reviewed here recently.

Their hotel rooms look quirky and top notch too, so I’m looking at booking their dinner, bed and breakfast deal.

When it comes to heading to the coast for fish and chips, The Magpie in Whitby is one of my favourites. I also love the Fisherman’s Wife but more for their seafood pie. I’m even organising a Yorkshire Rose Holidays coach trip here soon.

I tried the giant fish and chips at Wensleydale Heifer, which was the best fish and chips I’ve had inside a restaurant.
