Danny Malin column: From marzipan and candied fruit to a pile of Yorkshire Puddings on my Christmas dinner
Danny Malin gets festive nostalgia in this Christmas edition of his weekly column.
I can’t help but reminisce during this festive period as I devour all the sweet treats and dinners which remind me of my best childhood memories. Each family has their own set of traditions.
For me it’s all about having copious amounts of gravy on anything savoury, then unlimited custard on anything sweet. Until New Year’s Day ‘tis the season for treats.
I like to fill up the fridge with all kinds of cheeses ,fresh joints of meat from butchers, and creams such as brandy butter and clotted cream. In the freezer I’ll have an apple pie, plenty of Yorkshire puddings, and lots of vegetables for the trimmings.

Like most I’ll buy mince pies and Christmas pudding which won’t get eaten but what I will eat is those marzipan fruits and slices of fruit made out of jellied sweets. I love all the different chutneys, pickles and crackers too. Ensuring we’re always ready for leftovers of bubble and squeak or a buffet tea.
At the moment I’ve got a soft spot for farm shops especially ones like Farmer Copley’s, Blacker Hall Farm and Cannon Hall Farm who also produce their own ranges.
Copley’s sell amazing chutneys and gelato, Cannon Hall makes the best pies and sell freshly made ready meals, and Blacker Hall Farm has an awesome bakery with huge vanilla slices.
