Green light for burger chain Burgerism to open its doors in Leeds
A burger chain can open a new branch in a Leeds suburb after plans were agreed with council planning chiefs.
Manchester-based food firm Burgerism applied to move into a vacant shop unit at 605 Meanwood Road.
The company sought change-of-use planning permission for the former Papa Johns site, previously only permitted to serve Pizzas.
The new takeaway will be near the Meanwood Tavern pub and Zucco restaurant.
A planning officer’s report said the applicant must give details of extraction equipment to prevent odour affecting people living above.
It said: “The application site relates to a vacant ground floor premises within a parade of three commercial units in a local town centre.
“Above the premises are three floors of purpose-built self-contained flats.”
Leeds City Council said granting the application would not breach its policy on the proximity of takeaways to secondary schools.
Food would be served between 11pm and 11pm daily, the same hours as the previous occupant.
A design report by the applicant said: “The proposal will ensure the continued use of a vacant hot food takeaway and will support the continued viability of the town centre of Meanwood, with an exciting new operator in the market.”
Burgerism would employ up to 15 people from the local area.
