Head of Steam: 'I found one of Leeds’ best midweek pint spots - and it's all about the beer'

The Head of Steam on Mill Hill is one of those long-standing Leeds pubs that has quietly built a reputation for doing the basics very well.

With a strong focus on beer and a well-established presence in the city, it remains a reliable choice for a straightforward post-work pint.

We dropped in on a Wednesday evening for a catch up over a couple of drinks, and while it was a little quiet at first, there was a sense that the night was just getting started.

Equipment was being set up for live music later on, which gave the place a bit of anticipation. Unfortunately we were heading off before it began, but it is the kind of addition that would definitely tempt a return visit.

The beer selection is where this pub really stands out. There is a strong showing from Yorkshire breweries, with a range of local ales that reflect the region well.

Alongside those, there is also an impressive selection of harder-to-find Belgian beers, offering something a little different for those looking to branch out. Between us, we opted for a mix of local ales and one of the Belgian options, the latter coming in at a punchy 11 per cent and proving well worth it.

Our first round, with bar snacks, came to £12.90, a solid start to the evening. The second round totalled £17.90, largely due to the strength and quality of the Belgian beer, but still felt fair for what was in the glass. Alongside the drinks, we stuck with classic pub snacks, which complemented the beers perfectly and added to the no-frills, proper pub feel.

Service was warm and easy-going throughout.

At one point, one of our beers needed swapping due to some sediment, but it was handled quickly and without any fuss, replaced straight away with no questions asked. It is small moments like that which make a difference and show a confidence in what is being served.

While quieter than expected early on, the Head of Steam still delivered everything you would want from a midweek pub visit.

Good beer, friendly service and the promise of live music make it a spot worth returning to.
