Holding Patterns Leeds review: What I thought of this hidden listening bar with DJs, craft beer and vinyl

Tucked away in the very heart of Leeds, Holding Patterns is one of those places you can easily miss despite walking past it daily.

Set on Albion Place and flanked by familiar names like the New Conservatory, Bill’s and Lost & Found, the city’s self‑proclaimed ”listening bar” sits just below street level.

Only a flash of orange signage hints at the staircase leading down to a warm, quietly distinctive space.

Step inside and its identity isn’t immediately obvious - in a good way. By day, the room hums with the soft clatter of keyboards and low‑key conversations as people settle in with coffees and laptops to meet their looming deadlines.

In the evening, the purpose‑built DJ booth becomes the focal point, shifting the mood as the laptops disappear and the bar fills with the sound of curated sets, craft beers and cocktails.

Opened in 2024 by founders Jack, Rob and Lynsey, Holding Patterns set out to create a social space that felt different from the usual city‑centre offering.

It caters to audiophiles and casual drinkers alike, with a line‑up of draught beers and ciders that includes the light, crisp Lucky Buddha alongside staples such as Kirkstall’s Virtuous and Guinness.

Bottles, cans and a small but thoughtful wine list - including natural wines - round things out.

One of the bar’s most charming features is its compact record shop. Here, you can flick through crates of hip hop deep cuts, rare dance releases and new arrivals, or test a potential purchase on the in‑house turntable.

Just beyond it sits a cosy nook lined with bookshelves, offering a quieter corner for anyone wanting to unwind with a drink and a chapter after work.

Despite its modest 60‑person capacity, the space rarely feels cramped.

On our visit, a few readers occupy the nook while a larger group gathers around a central table, yet the room maintains an easy balance.

The music sits at that sweet spot - loud enough to shape the atmosphere without drowning out conversation.

Drinks are reasonably priced too, with a Lucky Buddha and a Virtuous coming to £12.60, and the small bar never feels overwhelmed.

Holding Patterns is, ultimately, a creative and comforting hideaway - equally suited to a focused afternoon coffee or a relaxed post‑work drink with friends.

It’s a welcome addition to the city centre, and one that rewards those who take the time to look down the stairs.
