Danny Malin: I review food for a living - here’s why Yorkshire is Britain’s best place to eat

Danny Malin shares the local food spots he always takes visitors to 🍴

Yorkshire has it all, from the former pit villages to the picturesque countryside - and this all influences the food we eat.

We’ve got traditional butchers selling pork pies, trendy bakehouses selling viral treats and street food vendors selling global cuisine.

When I’m doing my Danny vs Food reviews, I could be setting up my table and chair outside of a traditional chippy selling fish and chips cooked in beef dripping, and in the next episode it’s corn dogs and loaded fries.

I often host fellow food-reviewing pals in Yorkshire, and always with pride.

For me, you can’t beat a good chippy tea, roast dinner or a steak.

I love George A Greens or Kingfisher chippy in Wakefield, where I’ve taken several reviewers, as well as Three Flames Steakhouse just off M1 near Leeds and Wakefield.

For a cheap roast out, I do love a Toby Carvery, but one Sunday Dinner I’ll be taking my food-reviewing friends is in York - the former Terry’s Chocolate Orange factory. It was incredible quality as well as creative, whilst sticking to traditional roots and hearty portions.

It combines the history of York’s confectionery industry with the culinary talents of today’s top chefs.

When it comes to brunch, I love Laynes near Leeds Train Station, which does a twist on hearty Yorkshire grub such as their Yorkshire rarebit. It’s a great stop for a quick bite to eat and amazing coffee.

For a luxurious brunch I love Habbibi’s new menu. We recently recorded our podcast here and I love the intimacy of the place as well as the setting for a business brunch. They combine Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Western flavours using Yorkshire ingredients.

Nowadays, the food scene is constantly evolving with fish and chips shops such as the Scrap Box in York who are showcasing how tasty more sustainable types of fish are, including Hake. Then you’ve got the likes of Miller’s in York doing amazing fried chicken and spice boxes.

At one time, a quick snack was a pork pie or pasty. Thankfully, they’re still readily available but then you’ve got options now such as Bobby’s Salt and Pepper boxes or a delicious kebab from Skew.
