Masri, Trinity Kitchen: 'I thought I'd tried every cuisine in Leeds - then I discovered Egyptian street food'

I discovered a fresh taste of Egypt at Trinity Kitchen 🍴

Such is the varied offering of international cuisine in Leeds, it can be difficult to find something you’ve never tried before.

So it was a delight to discover Egyptian street food on offer courtesy of Masri, one of the latest line-up at Trinity Kitchen.

It was late on a weekday evening and many of the other vendors had already shut up shop for the night. But the guys at Masri were happy to stay a while longer to dish up our first experience of Egyptian cuisine.

There are eight main dishes on the menu plus a choice of loaded fries, sauces and side dishes – or you can upgrade to a meal deal that includes fries and a drink for another couple of quid.

I was tempted by the koshary – the national dish of Egypt, no less, or at least the most popular street food. For those who aren’t familiar with it, it’s a vegan mix of lentils, macaroni, vermicelli noodles and chick peas, topped with a garlicky tomato sauce, garlic vinegar, and crispy fried onions.

But on a hot summer evening and with several bags of shopping to lug around, it just seemed a bit heavy on the carbs. So I opted for a falafel burger, which was wonderfully light and topped with fried aubergine.

The burger itself is made from split broad beans and herbs such as garlic and coriander; crisp on the outside but soft in the middle with a succulent kick from a topping of tahini.

It would have been rude not to have fries with it (forget that earlier line about carbs) and the ones that arrived with it were perfectly golden and coated in a generous dusting of peri peri.

My guest is a huge fan of chicken so predictably went for the grilled chicken breast that’s marinated in herbs and spices then cooked fresh on the grill.

It also came with a satisfyingly huge portion of signature Masri rice and salad, drizzled in tahini. He reckoned it was one of the best chicken dishes he’d had – and the rice didn’t disappoint either (yes, I pinched some).

Also on the menu is Hawawshi – minced meat in herbs and spices served with home-made toasted Egyptian bread. Plus there are ribeye steak, prawns, a surf and turf option and even a mixed grill platter with a bit of everything – including with the sides, so you get both rice and fries.

It’s all cooked fresh and the guys couldn’t have been more welcoming.

The pop-ups at Trinity Kitchen rotate fairly frequently so if rich spices and hearty street food is your thing, catch it before it all changes.
