I tried the Leeds dive bar that's not for everyone - but I was impressed with its value and charm
It’s full of personality 🍻
Santiago Bar is one of those places that divides opinion, but for those who get it, it is a firm favourite.
Tucked away in Leeds city centre, the Grand Arcade venue leans fully into its dive bar aesthetic, and does so with confidence. It is not trying to be polished or refined, and that is exactly where its charm lies.
Getting that balance right is not easy, but Santiago manages it effortlessly, creating a space full of character that feels genuine rather than forced.

We stopped by on a Saturday daytime for a pre-dinner drink, and it was relatively quiet compared to the energy the bar is known for later in the evening.
From experience, it can become a packed and lively spot as the night goes on, with a buzzing atmosphere that keeps people coming back. Visiting earlier in the day offered a slightly different perspective, giving us a chance to enjoy the space at a slower pace.
The music deserves a mention too. Even during a quieter daytime visit, the playlist was spot on, adding to the bar’s personality and reinforcing why the atmosphere here is so well regarded when things are in full swing.
Drinks are straightforward, well-made, and very well priced. We started with one of the cocktail specials, a twist on a margarita featuring blueberry jam, alongside a pint of Pabst Blue Ribbon. The cocktail was a great take on a classic, while the Pabst stood out simply for being something you do not often see in the UK and made for an easy drinking choice.

For the second round, we kept things familiar with a classic margarita and a bourbon and coke, a regular go-to here. Both were exactly what you want them to be, well-balanced, no fuss and reliably done. It sums up Santiago’s approach perfectly. There is no unnecessary flair, just solid drinks delivered consistently.
Price is another strong point. The first round came to £14.20 and the second to £13.70, which feels like excellent value in Leeds, especially for a Saturday. It is the kind of place where you can settle in for a few drinks without constantly checking the bill.
Santiago’s will not be for everyone, and it does not try to be. But for those who appreciate its style, it offers something that feels increasingly rare. Character, simplicity and a genuinely good time.
