Karen Wright: A new year - a new food regime: Give away crisps – bring on grains and fruit
Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed the festive season and are looking forward to a lovely year ahead.
I had a brilliant Christmas surrounded by my family and then I enjoyed a quiet New Year.

I hope my year will ring many changes: I have already put plans in place to shake things up.
One thing we can do is to decide to eat cleanly – cutting down on ultra-processed foods and focusing on cooking from scratch using vegetables, grains, fruits and legumes.
Many of us over indulge at Christmas as we have so many extra treats in the house. I decide each year to eat or give away any chocolates, crisps, Christmas cakes and suchlike as soon as I get to the second of January so that I can get started in the new year with enthusiasm and determination.
Often people ask me for clean food meal suggestions and I usually give them two or three ideas for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I quite often skip breakfast so that I can lengthen my overnight fast. If I do eat breakfast then it will usually be Greek yoghurt with a tablespoon of Chia seeds, blueberries, raspberries and a few walnuts.
Alternatively, I might have a slice of whole meal sourdough toast with slices of avocado and a poached egg. For lunch I usually make soup using either root vegetables or Mediterranean vegetables. I use my soup maker for this as it is fast and gives a superb consistency. If I don't make soup, I will make a salad with rocket, tomatoes, cucumber and feta cheese or smoked mackerel.
For my evening meal I try to focus on wholegrains like brown rice or bulgar wheat and I might serve that with salmon and broccoli. Chicken is another favourite and I love that served with roasted sweet potatoes and carrots.
I use butterbeans often and cook them off in the oven in tomato and garlic sauce and serve with a scatter of feta cheese.
The biggest tip I can offer is to plan your meals in advance and make a shopping list. If your plate of food is colourful you are more than halfway there.
