Leeds restaurant launches Indian 'ultra roast' served in a giant Yorkshire pudding

An Indian restaurant in the city is celebrating its first anniversary with a quintessential Yorkshire item mixed with authentic South Asian cuisine.

Kerala Canteen, based on St. Peter’s Street, are set to offer what they are calling their Indian ‘ultra roast,’ served - of course - in a giant Yorkshire Pudding as part of their new Sunday lunch menu.

Speaking about the amalgamation of British and South Indian culinary traditions, Chef Bobby Geetha, Consulting Chef Patron, explains that the dish represents “who we are; made in Yorkshire, inspired by Kerala, and built around sharing.”

Designed as a centrepiece and an offering away from the ‘traditional’ Sunday roast, the Indian ‘ultra roast’ contains braised and roasted T‑bone steak with Hasselback potatoes, seasonal masala vegetables, finished with Kerala Canteen’s signature beef and bone marrow curry and served inside an 8-inch Yorkshire pudding, accompanied by a complimentary Kingfisher Ultra premium beer.

However, those looking to try this collision of culinary cultures are being advised to book a table in advance, as the speciality item will be made in limited quantities each week.

The clash of culinary styles comes as the establishment look to thank frequent diners in the city, by offering 50% off its Indian tapas selection throughout January (Sunday to Thursday), an offer open to both existing and new members of the Canteen Club loyalty programme, which is free to join.

Kerala Canteen’s first anniversary coincides with its inclusion in the 2024/25 Top 100 Indian Restaurants in the UK, a prestigious list that celebrates excellence, innovation, and hospitality across the country.

The restaurant also achieved #3 ranking in Yorkshire and Leeds, positioning it among the region’s most acclaimed dining destinations - two achievements that the establishment is not taking for granted.

“Delivering quality, value, and something truly different from the traditional curry house model has been challenging,” Chef Geetha remarks. “But to be embraced by Leeds and recognised nationally within our first year means everything to us.”
