I went to a cosy coffee shop in Wetherby to try their brunch - this is why it should be on your radar

“Hot on coffee, big on food”, that’s the slogan of Kofi & Co, a Leeds café that offers warm drinks and food designed to be the perfect pick-me-up.

The independent business has two sites in Leeds, one in Wetherby and another in Roundhay. Both are often bustling with customers, especially at the weekend.

I wanted to see the secret behind the hype so decided to try brunch at Kofi & Co’s Wetherby location on Market Street in the town centre.

From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming and the sound of customer conversations and gentle soul music filled the room. The decoration fit the classic café mould with a chalkboard menu highlighting the seasonal specials on the wall and wooden tables seating parties of twos and fours across the room. There were unique touches too with the brand name illuminated on a neon sign, fairylights by the bannister, and even artwork created by Kofi & Co co-founder George Pinder on display around the room. Fitting for a family business, this café felt incredibly homely.

With a no reservations policy, we had a slight delay before a table was available. The staff were lovely and clearly communicated how long the wait should be which put us at ease as we paused outside. Even amidst the busy lunchtime rush where they had many tables they were waiting upon, we never felt like the staff forgot about us.

Then, when we sat down, it was time to test if Kofi & Co was worth the wait. To drink, my plus one wanted to try a coffee because after all it is what this café is best known for. Her options were extensive, ranging from macchiatos to cinnamon matcha lattes, but as a stickler to tradition she simply went for the regular latte. For her, it was a perfect smooth blend that tasted both rich and sweet. As an extra delicate touch, the drink arrived with a heart drawn on top, a simple gesture which made it feel extra indulgent.

I meanwhile wanted to try Kofi Red, a freshly squeezed juice with strawberry, apple, and orange flavours. The justice was refreshing and energising however felt a little bit plain considering the £6 price. It tasted nice but it wasn’t especially different from anything I’ve had before nor was it a large portion. If I knew this, I perhaps would’ve tried one of Kofi & Co’s smoothies which cost the same amount but presumably are slightly more filling.

For our food, an egg dish to me seemed the most obvious option. This is because Kofi & Co has an entire section of their menu dedicated to the protein with options including spiced eggs or a three egg omelette. I went for the benedict special, a twist on the classic dish which replaces your usual muffin with two hash browns. When this arrived, what stood immediately was the presentation. The simple dish looked as if it had arrived straight from the Masterchef final because it looked so neatly plated.

It felt almost wrong to dig in but once I did, the taste did not disappoint. The poached eggs were tender and slightly runny, just how I like them, and this contrasted nicely against the crispy hash browns. The smoked bacon crumbs and a generous portion of Hollandaise sauce on top added an extra kick, proving that eggs benedict can be far from boring.

My plus one meanwhile tried the playfully named breakfast burrito which is filled with Cumberland sausage, beans, bacon, and an omelette with grilled cheese and mushroom. If that wasn't enough, she added hash browns too which made this a truly hearty meal. In her opinion, this dish was flavourful and exciting. If anything, they said they didn’t think they needed the hash browns as the dish was packed with plenty of product.

Overall, we would love to visit Kofi & Co again. The enjoyment from our visit proved exactly why people choose to queue for a table here. This is a hotspot perfect if you want a casual drink, a delicious brunch, or maybe even both at once. If you like any of these things, Kofi&Co should absolutely be on your radar.
