April is the month dedicated to the greatest meal of the day, that glorious mid-morning bridge between breakfast and lunch where pancakes, poached eggs, and mimosas take centre stage.
The term was first coined in 1895 by British author Guy Beringer in his article "Brunch: A Plea," published in Hunter’s Weekly.
In the Victorian era, ‘Sunday dinner’ was a heavy, formal affair served early in the day, and Beringer argued that for those who had enjoyed a few too many drinks on Saturday night, a heavy meat-based meal early on Sunday was "ordeal enough.”
He proposed a new meal, served around 11am, that started with tea or coffee and transitioned into heavier fare, stating that: "Brunch is cheerful, sociable and inciting. It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the cobwebs of the week."
But why a national month celebrating what some might refer to as ‘second breakfast’ (it’s really not)?
April marks the start of Spring and the return of peak brunch season: outdoor terrace dining and the busy Easter weekends, which is historically one of the biggest brunch days of the entire year.
