I tried the family-run Mexican restaurant in Leeds that's loved by regulars - and I can see why

There was one stand-out dish

Lupe’s Cantina has long been a staple of the Burley food scene, and after a recent visit it is easy to see why it has earned such a loyal following.

This is a place that knows exactly what it is doing, serving up some of the best Mexican food in Leeds with confidence, consistency and a clear respect for the classics.

The family-run Cardigan Road restaurant, in the heart of Leeds’ student quarter, was set up by The Garcias a decade ago, who set out to bring authentic Mexican cuisine to the UK.

Born and raised in Veracruz, Mexico, chef patron Rudy has been in the business since childhood and serves his family's traditional recipes, passed down by his mother, the eponymous Lupe.

His grandmother ran a successful eatery in Mexico for 60 years, too. And it’s that authenticity that’s meant the restaurant has been a longstanding hit.

From the outset of my visit, the foundations were strong. The salsas and guacamole were fresh and full of flavour, setting the tone for what was to come, while the queso delivered exactly what you would hope for, rich, indulgent and unapologetically cheesy.

These are the kinds of dishes that might seem simple, but when done this well, they become highlights in their own right.

Moving on to the mains, the fish tacos and carne asada were both outstanding. Each dish felt well put together and full of care, showcasing bold flavours without overcomplicating things.

There was, however, a slight disappointment in finding that some of the specials had already sold out by the time we arrived. It is perhaps a testament to how popular they are, but worth noting if you have your eye on something beyond the core menu. Arriving a little earlier might be the way to go.

One dish that deserves special mention, and should be on every table, is the grilled prawns. Simply put, they were exceptional. Cooked perfectly and packed with flavour, they stood out as one of the best dishes of the evening and are the kind of plate you find yourself thinking about long after you have left.

Service throughout was excellent. Dishes arrived well-timed and nicely spaced, allowing the meal to flow without feeling rushed. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, offering recommendations and checking in at just the right moments without ever becoming intrusive.

Of course, no visit would be complete without margaritas. A mezcal Tommy’s brought a smoky edge that paired beautifully with the food, while a mango margarita offered something a little fruitier and just as well balanced. Both were well executed and exactly what you want alongside a meal like this.

We finished with the salted chocolate cake which, while taking a little while to arrive, was well worth the wait. Rich, indulgent and a perfect way to round off the meal, it provided a fitting end to an already impressive visit.

Lupe’s Cantina continues to deliver where it matters most. Great food, thoughtful service and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere make it a standout choice in the city.
