The Melbourne review: This Leeds pub proves neighbourhood charm never goes out of style
A recent visit to Woodside - the 2024 city-centre offshoot from the team behind The Brunswick - reminded me just how well this group does neighbourhood pubs. So it felt like the right time to head back to one of their originals: The Melbourne.
The Oakwood favourite is one of several openings in recent years that have helped revitalise Roundhay Road, alongside Preston and SALT, now known as The Clock Inn.
Opened in 2020, it has established itself as a firm favourite among locals and Roundhay Park visitors alike.

On a foggy January evening, The Melbourne’s red neon lights and floor-to-ceiling windows beckon you inside. Within, dim red lighting sets the mood, while smart wooden benches contribute to a clean, modern feel.
Despite its modest size, The Melbourne feels surprisingly spacious. There are only a handful of tables, but the thoughtful layout prevents the room from feeling cramped.
At least three large televisions are strategically positioned throughout the space, allowing drinkers to follow the football without the pub tipping into full-blown sports bar territory.
The wooden bar is tucked neatly into a corner and focuses mainly on draught beer. Behind it, a clearly laid-out board lists the available options.

There’s a solid mix of local and international pours, including the in-house Melbourne Lager and Murphy’s stout, alongside a rotating selection of craft beers.
I opt for a perfectly poured pint of Murphy’s, a stout I personally prefer to Guinness. After being offered a taster by the friendly staff, my guest settles on the sour. It delivers exactly as promised - sharply citrusy and mouth-puckering. A great opener, though I can’t imagine getting through more than one without reaching for the Gaviscon.
One of The Melbourne’s long-running features is its wall of artwork by local artists, much of it available to buy.
Few things say “neighbourhood pub” quite like actively championing local creatives, and here it has become a defining feature - adding a fresh point of interest with every visit.

Four years on, The Melbourne remains a welcome fixture on the Oakwood high street. Its minimalist approach and smart design make it an easy place to linger, whether for an afternoon pint or a longer evening session.
A strong range of affordable beers and ciders, coupled with the ever-changing display of local art, gives regulars plenty of reason to keep coming back.
