There has been a ‘surge’ in first-time house buyers looking to get their foot on the property ladder.

But which areas are proving most popular, as they look further afield in search of better value and a good work/life balance?

A mortgage and property expert has picked out six of the most in-demand spots for first-time buyers in 2026, and explained why they are increasingly appealing.

Sam Fox, the founder of UK Mortgage Centre, said the north and the Midlands the regions providing the best options for first-time buyers.

But parts of the South East are also still cited as places where house-hunters can get their foot on the ladder.

Sam said: “2026 has already seen a surge in first-time buyers looking to get their foot on the ladder, and there are a number of areas where they are finding they can boost their chances.

“Because affordability is still a huge challenge, many first-time buyers are prioritising clearer value for money, transport links for commuting, and strong local jobs markets.

“They’re also increasingly willing to look outside the big cities, seeking more space, better community environments and the chance to actually buy rather than rent for years.

“Areas with good rail links to major employment hubs, developing local economies and vibrant cultural scenes are proving especially attractive.

“Many buyers now balance lifestyle factors like green space, schools and quality of life with property cost.

“In 2026 we’re seeing that shift accelerate as people reassess where they want to live and work.”

Below are six of the most sought-after areas for first-time buyers, according to Sam, based on recent data and Rightmove analysis.
