Leeds is once again currently reaping the rewards of a massive, coordinated effort to ‘blossomise’ the city, most notably through the Sakura Cherry Tree Project.
Launched to celebrate 150 years of friendship between the UK and Japan, this ambitious initiative saw over 7,000 Japanese cherry trees gifted to the UK.
Leeds was a major beneficiary, with hundreds of young saplings, including the vibrant Beni-yutaka, the pure white Taihaku, and the classic Somei-yoshino, being planted in our parks, schools, and community spaces.
Now that these trees have had a few years to establish their roots, they are reaching maturity and transforming our urban landscape into a world-class ‘Sakura’ paradise.
Combined with the National Trust’s #BlossomWatch campaign and local efforts by Love Leeds Parks, the city is now home to stunning ‘pink tunnels’ and floral circles that rival any in the country.
Here are our picks of 13 locations in and around the city where you can watch the cherry blossoms bloom this spring.
