Inside racehorse trainer Tom Tate's fabulous £1.5m Victorian home next to Hazlewood Castle

Castle Farmhouse, a Victorian property next to Hazlewood Castle in North Yorkshire, has been placed on the market for £1.5m.

The five-bedroom house has been home to racehorse trainer Tom Tate and his family for more than three decades.

Situated between York and Leeds, the property is believed to have been built in the mid-19th century by the Vavasour family, who owned the Hazlewood estate for more than 900 years. The Grade I-listed Hazlewood Castle, once part of the same estate, now operates as a hotel and spa.

Formerly used as a priest’s house for the castle, Castle Farmhouse includes four reception rooms, a traditional farmhouse kitchen and breakfast room, a master suite with dressing room and en suite, four additional bedrooms, and two bathrooms.

The house stands in grounds of around 2.5 acres, with gardens that back onto Hazlewood Castle, a walled garden, and a tennis court.

The interior includes a large drawing room with a bar and adjoining garden room, a central kitchen with utility and office space, and a turning staircase leading to the upper floor. Two guest bedrooms are accessed via a spiral staircase and connected internally to the main accommodation.

The property requires general updating throughout. A 10-acre field adjacent to the house is available by separate negotiation.

Tom Tate, who previously had a successful career as an amateur jockey before becoming a trainer, moved to the farmhouse in 1989.

Castle Farmhouse is for sale with Hewetson and Johnson at a guide price of £1.5m. More information is available at hewetsonandjohnson.co.uk or by calling 01347 868308.
