Headingley’s historic graveyard to be reborn as St Michael’s Gardens pocket park

This Easter, a long-hidden corner of Headingley’s history is coming back to life.

The Friends of St Michael’s Church Graveyard are officially launching St Michael’s Gardens, an ambitious community project dedicated to turning an overgrown graveyard into a vibrant, shared green sanctuary.

With no burials at the site for over a century, the space is uniquely positioned for this "garden of renewal."

Supported by a grant from Leeds City Council’s Community Committee, the project aims to foster a sense of belonging and tranquillity through a meaningful connection with nature.

Led by the Leeds Parks Department, crews have been clearing decades of brambles and ivy to reveal long-forgotten stories of Headingley’s residents.

Names like the Schofields have re-emerged, alongside the grave of farmer Thomas Hutchison - a poignant reminder of the area's rural village roots.

To mark the beginning of this new chapter, the Friends Group invites the public to their first event this Easter Saturday.

Residents are invited to help plant primroses that will carpet the site for generations to come.

"It’s been incredible to see so many local volunteers coming together to create a new pocket park in Headingley," says Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Deputy Leader.

"I’m excited for the further changes we are going to see... and the opportunities to bring everyone together in activities like community gardening."

Over the coming years, the site will continue to evolve into a multifaceted community hub, featuring contemplative pathways for quiet reflection, vibrant wildflower and woodland areas designed to boost local biodiversity, and a year-round seasonal programme of creative, community, and wellbeing events.
