Life on the Leeds street crowned Yorkshire's most expensive - and who's moving there
Wigton Lane has long held its status as one of Leeds’ most sought-after addresses.
The street in Alwoodley, in the northern part of the city, is well known for a reason. Its eye-catching mansions and expensive cars make it stand out as one of Leeds’ most exclusive areas.
So when Rightmove this week revealed Britain’s most expensive streets for 2026, it may not surprise many that Wigton Lane is the most expensive street in all of Yorkshire.

With an average asking price of £1,317,857, not everyone can afford to move here. So who buys a home on Yorkshire’s most expensive street?
The street’s popularity is nothing new, according to Louise Lawrence, branch manager of luxury estate agent Fine & Country.
“Wigton Lane has always been a street that people aspire to live on, so it’s been popular for a long time,” she told the YEP. “When the Grammar School at Leeds was built close by, its popularity soared even further and lots of families moved there so their kids could go to the school and walk to and from it.”
Far from being homogeneous, the residents of Wigton Lane represent a diverse mix of successful people.

“As well as being hugely popular amongst young families, we also see a lot of young professionals buying on the street, who are often thinking about having children,” Louise said.
“Since Covid, we’ve also seen more people moving back from the south because they can work from home. They often choose to buy on Wigton Lane as they can get more for their money, and live in a more exclusive area than they’d be able to in London and its surrounding areas.”
The diversity of the residents is reflected in the properties themselves, Louise explained. As older residents decide to downsize, homes regularly come onto the market, providing new opportunities.
“The people who buy these properties often have the money to completely update or rebuild them,” she noted, “which is what makes the homes on Wigton Lane so diverse.”

Beyond the school and the opulent properties, the street’s geographical advantages further cement its desirability among high-end buyers.
“The street’s proximity to the countryside and Shadwell village, plus its easy access to the city centre and motorway networks also add to its popularity, and homes on the street usually attract a lot of interest amongst buyers in the higher end of the market.”
With its combination of an elite location, top-tier schooling, and easy access to both nature and the city, it’s little surprise that homes on Wigton Lane regularly attract considerable interest in the higher end of the market, ensuring its position as Yorkshire’s most expensive street.
