'A journey to find positivity': Brain injury survivor launches art trail at Leeds' York Gate Garden

Local volunteer Sam Booth has launched a new outdoor photography trail at Adel’s historic York Gate Garden, using his art to find positivity following a life-changing brain injury

A historic Leeds garden has launched its inaugural outdoor art trail, showcasing a striking new collection of photography captured by a local volunteer who turned to the craft following a life-changing brain injury.

York Gate Garden in Adel hosted nearly 100 guests for an exclusive preview of the exhibition, which features the work of local photographer and passionate gardener Samuel Booth.

Having volunteered at both York Gate and Harewood House, Booth’s photography played a pivotal role in his personal recovery journey following his injury, helping him find positivity and express his experiences through visual art.

Visitors to the 1-acre garden can now explore the trail during normal opening hours, discovering Booth’s intimate shots of York Gate’s distinctive "garden rooms" and seasonal planting displayed throughout the grounds.

Steve Roach, Gardens Development Manager at horticultural charity Perennial, said: "We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Sam for our inaugural photography exhibition.

His passion for York Gate and the journey he has been on is inspiring, and it has been wonderful to see his photographs bringing a fresh perspective to the garden."

Speaking about the launch, Samuel Booth added: "I feel truly honoured to exhibit my work at York Gate and deeply grateful to everyone who has supported me. My love of gardening began on my grandad’s allotments and grew through volunteering.

"Photography has helped me find positivity, and I hope these images share some of the comfort, joy and inspiration that gardens have given me."

Managed by Perennial - the national charity supporting people working in horticulture - all proceeds from admissions, print orders, and gift shop sales directly support the charity’s work.

The York Gate Garden Art Trail runs Wednesday to Sunday until November 1, from 10am to 4pm. Standard admission fees apply.
