Yorkshire town ranked amongst the top five hotspots for 'pampered' pooches - full list
Yorkshire is officially marking its territory as one of the most dog-obsessed regions in the country.
With the rise of dog-friendly cafes and pubs across the United Kingdom, it comes as no surprise to many that our beloved canine companions might be getting a little more spoiled compared to previous generations.
Now, new data has confirmed just how deep this obsession goes, with one Yorkshire town emerging as a national leader in the ‘paw-to-person’ ratio.
That research has revealed that Harrogate is one of the top three dog capitals of the UK, with a staggering 7.4 dogs for every 20 residents.
In fact, the ‘Golden Triangle’ is so full of mutts that locals say owners are spending more on designer coats for their pets than they do on their own children.
The study, conducted by the University of Leeds, the University of Exeter, and the Dogs Trust, found that the UK’s dog population has been underestimated by a massive four million, sitting at a total of 13 million nationwide.

While Telford took the top spot, the North is leading the pack. Darlington came in second, with Harrogate following closely behind to secure its place as the most dog-heavy town in Yorkshire.
The trend isn't just about the number of dogs but how we're treating them, with many owners admitting to treating their pets more often than their children and some seen "better dressed" than the local kids.
Professional groomers have also reported that customers are more than happy to spend more on a dog’s haircut than they would on their own, while local supermarkets have seen animal charity donation bins often overflowing, while children’s charities lag.
Dr Kirsten McMillan, deputy head of research at Dogs Trust, noted that while the UK has always been a nation of animal lovers, the "stark differences" in regional density were fascinating to uncover.
"It's been fascinating to uncover stark differences in dog density throughout the UK, with Telford and Darlington emerging as leaders, boasting the highest dog-to-human ratios,” Kirsten notes.
"These and future statistics provide valuable insights into regional trends and the dynamics of pet ownership across the country."
With Harrogate boasting such high numbers, it seems the local parks and Yorkshire countryside are the primary drivers for our four-legged obsession.
