1975 and all that! Leeds United great Norman Hunter's medal up for sale

It may not have ended in victory but, more than 40 years on, the 1975 European Cup final remains perhaps the biggest match in Leeds United's proud history.

Now Leeds fans with some cash to spare could get their hands on a little piece of sporting treasure from that night in Paris.

The runners-up medal presented to Elland Road legend Norman Hunter after United’s 2-0 controversial defeat against Bayern Munich is going up for auction.

And the medal is expected to fetch as much as £4,000 when it goes under the hammer in a sporting memorabilia sale being held on April 25 and 26 at Sotheby’s in London.

Graham Budd, whose Graham Budd Auctions firm has organised the sale, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “It’s a runners-up medal but nevertheless it’s still a major achievement and a very desirable object.”

Famously nicknamed ‘Bites Yer Legs’, tough-tackling central defender Hunter made more than 700 appearances for Leeds between 1962 and 1976.

He sold off a selection of items from his glittering career in 2013, including the 1975 medal that has now reappeared on the market.

Speaking to the YEP before that sale, he touched on United’s defeat in Paris as he modestly said: “It’s not a bad little collection, really.

“The only thing that’s not in there is a European Cup winner’s medal. That would have rounded things off nicely.”

Hunter and co are widely regarded as having been robbed of their rightful place as champions of Europe by a questionable refereeing display in the 1975 final.
