Police have launched a murder investigation after a woman who suffered serious head injuries in an attack in Huddersfield died over the weekend.

Gareth Brook, 34, now faces a charge of murder following the death of 33-year-old Lisa Smith, who died in hospital on Sunday (December 21).

Brook was arrested after police were called to a property on Fernside Avenue in Almondbury shortly after midnight last Friday (December 19).

Officers attending the address found Ms Smith with severe head injuries, and she was taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

Brook, of Fernside Avenue, was initially charged with Section 18 wounding with intent and appeared before Leeds Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (December 20).

Following Ms Smith’s death on Sunday evening, the investigation has been upgraded to murder.

A forensic post-mortem will take place to establish the cause of death. Brook has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Leeds Crown Court on January 16.

West Yorkshire Police said court proceedings will reflect the findings of the forensic post-mortem.
