Defiant prisoners who ambushed and beat inmate at HMP Wakefield shout 'bull****' during court sentencing
A convicted rapist and a violent thug who ambushed a prisoner on their wing shouted “bull****” and scoffed when details of their vicious assault were heard in court.
Andrew Beadie and Vinchenzo Sarli attacked the inmate at HMP Wakefield, taking it in turns to punch and kick him to the head. Both prisoners, who are serving lengthy jail terms, shooks their heads and audibly swore as they appeared in Leeds Crown Court.
It was heard that the pair had been talking on the landing at the Wakefield jail at around 4.15pm on June 9 when the victim walked past. They then followed him with 27-year-old Sarli punching him to the face twice, with 34-year-old Beadie following it up with a flurry of punches to the man’s body.
The man fell to the floor on his hands and knees where Sarli threw more punches as Beadie held him. He was then kicked to the head.
He staggered to his feet and away from the scene leaving a “spatters of blood” as he went, prosecutor Samuel Sharp said. He suffered a broken nose, two black eyes, a broken tooth, a concussion and pain in his jaw and knee.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, he said it was unprovoked, had affected him physically and now needed walking sticks.
He also said it affected him psychologically, leaving him with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and was now scared to attend the gym or the exercise yard because Sarli was still serving at HMP Wakefield.
Beadie, however, has since been moved to another Category A prison, HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire.
But the pair, who appeared over the video link from prison, scoffed at the statement. Sarli even got up from his seat while it was being read out, clearly upset. One was heard to say “bull****”.
They both admitted a charge of ABH. Beadie has 17 previous convictions for 30 offences, and was jailed in 2017 for Section 18 GBH on an undercover police officer in Essex.
Sarli has 13 previous convictions for 39 offences, and was given an indeterminate-length sentence in 2010 for rape.
Mitigating for 27-year-old Beadie, Ashleigh Metcalfe said he had spent the majority of his adult life behind bars. She said the prison attack was “relatively short-lived” and that his early guilty plea was his best mitigation.
For Sarli, Nick Murphy said he had been diagnosed for anti-social borderline personality disorder which leads to “impulsive decision making” and the “disregard for others”.
The judge, Recorder Aisha Wadoodi described it as a “vicious assault” and gave the pair six months’ jail, to run consecutively to their existing sentence.
