Man rescued after climbing up side of Leeds General Infirmary hospital - before being arrested

A road in Leeds was cordoned off last night after a man climbed up scaffolding on the side of Leeds General Infirmary.

Emergency services shut Calverley Street in the city centre yesterday (February 25) to deal with the incident. The man was safely brought down before being arrested for a prior assault on two members of hospital security.

Pictures and video from the scene last night showed a police car guarding the scene on Wednesday evening. One of our reporters was at the scene and officers confirmed it was not related to the ‘gunshot wounds’ incident on Tuesday (February 24).

Traffic was diverted from the scene on Calverley Street on Wednesday night and people were turned away as well.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called to Leeds General Infirmary at about 6pm on Wednesday night ( 25 February) to a report a man had climbed scaffolding up the side of the Brotherton Wing of Leeds General Infirmary.

“Officers established a scene and engaged with the man who eventually came down safely just before 9.30pm.

“He later was arrested on suspicion of a prior assault on two members of hospital security staff and is in custody this morning.”

The cordon has since been lifted and Calverley Street has been reopened.
