Leeds residents warned of smoke alarm scam claiming £500 fine
Residents being urged to report the messages if they receive them
The fire service has warned of a “potential scam” targeting residents in Leeds and West Yorkshire.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it has received reports of emails being sent to residents claiming that they will be fined £500 if they do not install smoke alarms by a specific deadline.

A spokesperson said that the service “would never charge individuals in their homes for smoke detectors”.
They said: “We recommend that anyone who receives this message marks the email as spam and reports it to their email provider.”
