Wakefield nuisance who made 87-year-old mother's life a misery is jailed

Judge said he had “no remorse” for his actions

A nuisance who has persistently ignored court orders to keep him away from his mother has been handed a jail sentence.

Paul Jones has spent years harassing the 87-year-old and even convinced her that his latest restraining order had been lifted, which was a lie.

Jones appeared at Leeds Crown Court this week after pleading guilty to yet another breach.

The court heard that a two-year order was made in February after he was convicted of harassing and assaulting his mother.

But three months later he went to her home address in Wakefield, telling her he had just been discharged from hospital so she took pity and allowed him to stay.

The 58-year-old also told her the restraining order was no longer in place.

Jones’ partner also came to the house and they stayed for around two weeks.

But the elderly victim lost patience on June 1 and called the police, accusing the pair of stealing items, although it was later found that she had simply mislaid them herself, the court was told.

However, homeless Jones was arrested for the breach. He was held on remand and appeared in court this week over a video link from HMP Leeds.

He has 27 previous convictions for 66 offences dating back as far as 1985.

Mitigating, Tom Doyle said: “Even if the court was minded to suspend [the sentence], there’s the issue of a lack of available accomodation.”

He said Jones had epilepsy which he struggled to control.

Judge Simon Phillips KC told Jones: “There’s no sense of remorse for the misery you have inflicted over the years upon your mother.

“There are multiple offences of harassment towards her. You have shown utter disregard for restraining orders.”

He jailed Jones for 14 months and gave him a new five-year restraining order.
