Wakefield driver escapes jail as toys in front window contribute to fatal crash
80-year-old John Nottingham died as a result of his injuries
A Wakefield driver who killed an elderly pedestrian in a car collision after her view was blocked by stuffed toys in her car window, has been sentenced today (August 20).
The incident took place in the Lupset area of Wakefield on March 1 2024 after Rosemarie Ozsko drove through a left-hand filter lane and struck John Nottingham as he began to cross the road.
Mr Nottingham died in hospital the following day as a result of his injuries.
He was described by his family as a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, and family member by his relatives and is missed by all who knew him.
Ms. Ozsko, 65, pulled over to assist following the collision, and a number of passers-by also stopped to assist with first aid until the emergency services arrived.

After the incident, investigators determined that stuffed toys hanging from the rear-view mirror of Ms. Ozsko’s car had a significant effect on her visibility.
It was found that had the toys not been there, then Ozsko would have had a clearer view of Mr Nottingham.

Ms. Ozsko was sentenced today at Leeds Crown Court after pleading guilty to death by careless driving.
She was sentenced today to an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for twelve months along with a two-year disqualification from driving.
Detective Sergeant Steve Suggitt from the major collision enquiry team said: “This case highlights the importance of road safety, the highway code and the importance of keeping a windscreen clear to ensure drivers can see clearly. Items such as mobile phones and Sat Navs should not be placed where they can interfere with your ability to see the road and those around you.
“The tragic passing of Mr Nottingham should serve as a warning to other drivers, and our thoughts remain with his loved ones.”
A report in the Yorkshire Evening Post dated August 20 stated that Rosemarie Oszko was sentenced after pleading guilty to death by dangerous driving. The Yorkshire Evening Post clarifies that this was in fact death by careless driving.
