Scottish police linked the defendant’s drugs supply to a death in Scotland

A Wakefield dealer whose supply was linked to a drug-related death in Scotland has been jailed.

Jamie Palmer was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court today after pleading guilty to the supply of class A drugs and possession with intent to supply cannabis.

The court heard how Scottish police linked the defendant’s drugs supply to a death in Scotland, the details of which were then passed on to West Yorkshire Police.

Prosecutor Adam Walker detailed how officers subsequently raided the defendant’s home - uncovering evidence of a “drugs retail business” being operated from the address.

This included weighing and packaging equipment, cannabis sweets, prescription medication and tablets of the strong opioid - Oxycodone, the court heard.

A search of Palmer’s bank records discovered £20,000 had been transferred in and Mr Walker said it was the Crown’s case that a “fair proportion” of this was from the sale of drugs.

The 36-year-old, of Western Avenue, Pontefract, has one previous conviction for possession of an offensive weapon and was subject to a suspended sentence when the drug offences came to light.

In mitigation, defence counsel Imran Khan said his client was “exceptionally remorseful” for his actions and understands how much they have “impacted others.”

He said that the father-of-three recognised that he had “let himself and his family down,” and added that he had gotten himself clean from a cannabis addiction since his arrest.

Judge, Recorder James Baird, sentenced Palmer to 40 months in prison.

“You are clearly a talented and hardworking man but used those skills to operate a drugs business,” he said.
