Wakefield golf course damaged in 'disgraceful and deliberate act of vandalism'

The incident has been reported to the police

Wakefield Council is appealing for information after Wakefield Golf Course was deliberately damaged by vandals.

Large areas of the course were damaged by motorbikes on Monday, August 3, with the 5th and 6th greens particularly affected.

The damaged greens were temporarily closed to allow essential repairs and have now reopened to support qualifying competitions and meet governing body requirements. Although they are currently difficult to putt on in areas, repair work is continuing during play.

The incident has been reported to West Yorkshire Police.

Coun Lukasz Borcz, Wakefield Council's Cabinet Member for Culture and Sport, said: "This was a disgraceful and deliberate act of vandalism that has caused significant damage to the golf course and a totally avoidable disruption for local golfers.

"Our teams are now working to repair the greens and get them back up to standard as quickly as possible.

“We urge anyone who may have seen anything, or who has information about those responsible, to please contact West Yorkshire Police."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police on 101, quoting crime reference number 13260442827.
