Over 60 arrests made in first week of West Yorkshire drink and drug-driving crackdown

More than 60 people have been arrested during the first week of a new West Yorkshire Police operation targeting drink and drug driving.

The force has made 64 arrests since launching its Christmas crackdown on Monday, December 1.

Among the arrests were a suspected drug driver detained after a 140mph motorway chase, and a man who blew more than five times the drink-drive limit after stopping in a live lane on the M62.

Officers also arrested a woman on suspicion of drink driving following a collision. A young child was found in the back of the car, and police discovered she only held a provisional licence.

In Wakefield, two suspected drug drivers were detained within half an hour of each other during a static roadside operation. One man drove into the police checkpoint before attempting to turn around and leave, prompting a short chase.

A police spokesperson said: “Throughout December, we’re stepping up proactive patrols and educating drivers about the consequences of getting behind the wheel whilst under the influence.”
