Exclusive:The number of West Yorkshire Police officers charged with crimes since 2024 including terrorism offence

Over a dozen serving police officers have been charged with criminal offences over the past two years, the YEP can reveal.

New data, obtained exclusively by the Yorkshire Evening Post through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request submitted to West Yorkshire Police, has revealed 12 serving officers have been convicted of criminal convictions since the start of 2024.

The convictions included a police constable who was charged and later sentenced for offences under the Terrorism Act in 2024.

West Yorkshire Police have pledged to root out any wrongdoing within the force, and every member receives regular mandatory training on expected standards.

“We are determined to root out wrongdoing in the police and we have tough measures in place for anyone found to not be adhering to the standards the public expect from their police force. We also work to empower people across the organisation to report any behaviours not in line with the standards and values we uphold,” a force spokesperson said.

“When officers and staff are the subject of misconduct proceedings, we are open and transparent in publishing the details. Every single member of the organisation must complete regular mandatory training relating to the standards of professional behaviour and the Code of Ethics.”

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), the independent watchdog for policing in England and Wales, is responsible for investigating serious complaints, allegations of misconduct, and deaths or serious injuries following police contact.

Convictions, listed among the FOI’s findings, also included six officers found guilty of being over the prescribed limit for driving and another convicted of theft and fraud over a 18-month period.
