Stourton fire: Fire service releases update as crews remain at Leeds waste management centre

The fire service has seen a ‘large volume’ of emergency incidents

Crews are continuing to tackle a fire at a waste management centre in Leeds - more than 33 hours after the blaze broke out.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) were called to the centre in Valley Farm Road, Stourton, at around 12.45am on Saturday (August 8).

At the height of the fire, 12 crews and supporting units were dealing with the incident, and residents were urged to keep windows and doors shut.

In an update at 9am today, a spokesperson for the fire service said: “Four crews and two aerial appliances remain at the scene this morning.”

On Saturday, WYFRS said it was dealing with “large volume” of emergency incidents and urged residents only to dial 999 in a “genuine emergency”.

The fire service said the volume of calls has now returned “to a more usual level”.

The blaze follows a separate fire in Stourton on Wednesday, with smoke and flames captured billowing from an industrial park in Haigh Park Road.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of that fire.
