Wickes staff help clear Leeds Ring Road after horror crash as woman airlifted to hospital

Staff at a Wickes store in Leeds had to help clear Leeds Ring Road this afternoon following a major crash.

Joe Birthwright, store manager at the Wickes store in Moor Allerton, said that emergency crews asked for the use of a forklift truck to remove a boulder that had gone into the road following the crash this morning (Sunday).

An air ambulance landed in a field near the site of the collision on Ring Road Moortown and a woman was taken to hospital, Mr Birthwright said.

He said that the crash happened shortly after the store opened at 10am and that they “heard the helicopter above the store”, adding: “It was all commotion outside.”

Mr Birthwright said that the crash had happened at the turning into the Wickes store and that the car had crashed into the company’s sign before going into the bushes and knocking a boulder into the road.

He said: “It’s had a good couple of barrel roles. It was definitely not going 30mph. No one’s going at the speed limit and knocking a boulder into the road.

“We have just had a word with the police who said a woman was taken to hospital. I asked if she was okay and they don’t seem too concerned for her so I can imagine it’s all good.”

He added: “The boulder’s gone into the middle of the road and we’ve had to move it with our forklift because the highway men were looking and not knowing how to move it.”

He said that the Ring Road has remained closed into this afternoon, with cars diverted onto adjacent roads or to the other side of the carriageway.

He said that emergency crews are waiting for the vehicle wreckage to be removed before reopening the Ring Road.

West Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service have been contacted for a statement.
