Man collapses during World Coal Carrying Championships in West Yorkshire

A man has been rushed to hospital after collapsing during the World Coal Carrying Championships in a village in West Yorkshire.

The races, held traditionally each Easter Monday, see competitors run over a kilometre with a 50 kilogram back of coal on their backs through the village of Gawthorpe, near Ossett.

A statement from Yorkshire Ambulance Service read: “We were called at 11.29am today to the High Street outside the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Gawthorpe.

“We sent two ambulances and a doctor, and we have transported the patient to hospital.”
