⚠️ Residents should keep windows shut

Leeds residents have been urged to avoid the Stourton area as firefighters continue to tackle a large blaze.

The fire broke out at a waste management centre in Valley Farm Road at around 12.45am today (Saturday August 8).

At the height of the fire, 12 crews and supporting units were dealing with the incident.

In an update this morning, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said six crews remained at the scene - upped to seven crews and an aerial ladder at 10am.

Pictures show significant damage and smoke at the site.

At noon, a spokesperson for the fire service said: “We now have six crews and two aerials at the scene and will be continuing to attend the premises throughout the afternoon.

“Please continue to avoid the area and keep doors and windows shut due to smoke.

“Thank you for your help while our crews continue their work.”

Residents have reported being able to smell the smoke from the city centre and east and north Leeds this morning.

The blaze follows a separate fire in Stourton on Wednesday, with smoke and flames captured billowing from an industrial park in Haigh Park Road.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of that fire.
