Meet the grime-fighting team tasked with keeping Leeds City Centre streets clean
From early morning deep cleans to rapid response call outs, Leeds’ Street Rangers have quietly become a vital part of the city’s daily heartbeat.
Since the service first began in 2016, the rangers have carried out more than 800 deep cleans - the equivalent of cleaning from Leeds to London.
They’ve also been on hand to respond to 23,000 daily reactive cleans. And now thanks to a new investment from Leeds BID they are set to step up their mission to create a cleaner, greener and more welcoming city centre.
The BID has expanded the number of Street Rangers, increased the geographical area they cover, and introduced new industry-leading green and electric technology. This enhanced kit enables deeper, more efficient cleans of high-footfall pavements, walkways and pedestrianised zones, and allows the team to tackle graffiti in areas where chemicals can’t be used.
Their work goes far beyond keeping things tidy: from street washing to chewing gum removal, from major deep cleans to rapid-response callouts on both public and private property, they are the team businesses rely on to keep Leeds looking its best.

Leeds BID chief executive Andrew Cooper said: “The LeedsBID Street Rangers are one of our most impactful additions to Leeds city centre, making a visible difference to the streets beneath people’s feet.
“Their enormous impact on the aesthetics of Leeds has created an ever-increasing demand and growing expectation from the city and businesses, who now rightly prioritise this vital service. LeedsBID is committed to continuing to invest in and strengthen this essential team while working alongside multiple facilities partners to ensure the city shines.”
The Street Rangers now also play a pivotal role in a new LeedsBID initiative encouraging city centre businesses to contribute to the environment and communities around them.
By harnessing ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) volunteering days, LeedsBID is inviting workforces to take part in hands-on sessions which deliver immediate local impact.
The entire LeedsBID team, office staff and Street Rangers recently completed a trial “action session” with the Crowne Plaza Leeds on Wellington Street, litter-picking, clearing leaves and helping to revitalise the surrounding area.
More sessions will roll out in the new year, with the Street Rangers leading volunteer teams through tasks including litter picking, cleaning, painting and wider environmental improvements.
