Fire service releases statement after crews cordon off part of Leeds city centre

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed why Albion Place was cordoned off yesterday

A busy street in Leeds city centre was cordoned off yesterday afternoon (May 25) after fire crews were called to the Sainsbury's Local on Albion Street.

Emergency services were spotted at the scene from 1pm on the Bank Holiday Monday, and they put a safety cordon on the pavement surrounding the shop.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has now released a statement on the incident.

They confirmed that fire crews were called to the shop shortly after midday due to reports of smoke.

A spokesperson said: “Upon arrival, crews identified the source as smoke caused by a fridge leak. There was no fire involved.

“Firefighters ventilated the premises and crews left the scene at approximately 2pm.”

A witness to the incident previously said: “There was a hosepipe running along the floor. I could see three fire engines with one of them in blue lights.

“It’s a busy bank holiday in Leeds city centre and there was plenty of people stopping and looking to see what happened.”
