Demolition of Gipton Gates high-rises in Leeds set for June after contractor appointed
The demolition of two high-rise blocks in east Leeds is expected to begin this summer following the appointment of a contractor.
Demolition of the Gipton Gates East and Gipton Gates West high-rises could begin in June, following the appointment of Metropolitan Demolition Ltd to carry out the work.
The demolition is expected to take 11 months and is estimated to cost between £3 million and £5 million, including asbestos removal, a council report reveals.

Discussions about the future of the two buildings began in 2022, when consultations started on rehousing households living in the high-rises.
This involved around 291 households across the two Gipton Gates developments, as well as Alderton Heights in Alwoodley.
Once cleared, the land is expected to become available for future development.
“The demolition of these blocks will enable the council to remove unsustainable, lower-quality homes from the council housing stock and replace them with new, modern housing,” the report states.
Currently, Gipton Gates East and West comprise a total of 120 flats, covering around 2.5 acres of land, including parking and garages.
Leeds City Council’s chief housing officer approved the appointment of Metropolitan Demolition Ltd for the demolition contract on Thursday, 2 April.
