How Leeds United crowd can honour memory of tragic fan today

Leeds United supporters can today pay tribute to a much-missed overseas fan of the club on what would have been his 56th birthday.

Peter Lagares, from Gibraltar, died just weeks after making his first ever visit to Elland Road back in 2011.

Now his son, Jesse, 24, is appealing for supporters to remember Peter with applause during the 56th minute of United’s crunch promotion clash today at home to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Jesse, who has been living and working as a music producer and DJ in Leeds, said: “It would be the biggest gesture if we could all clap on the 56th minute in his memory. I don’t know what better present to get him now that he is no longer with us – it would mean the world to me if it could be possible as I know he will be with us in spirit.” Peter’s trip to see Leeds beat Nottingham Forest in 2011 was a surprise birthday present from his son.

“Sadly he passed away two months after this,” said Jesse. “That night in the hospital saying our last goodbyes, my last words to him were ‘no matter what, we’ll be forever marching on together’.”
