Back in 1989, Jason Donovan was still appearing in Ozzie TV soap Neighbours but in March of that year he announced he would soon quit to concentrate on his solo pop career.

Comic Bernie Clifton (now 80), who was famous for riding a pretend ostrich on stage, had to bow out of a charity race after someone stole the puppet.

Films of the day included Rain Man, The Naked Gun, Die Hard, Short Circuit 2, Cocktail and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Also in this month, Tim Berners-Lee produced the proposal document that will become the blueprint for the World Wide Web. This was also the month of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska’s Prince William Sound, when 240,000 barrels of oil were spilt.
