Leeds nostalgia: Wings for victory

It's the summer of 1943 and the people of Leeds are pulling together to buy aircraft for the war effort.

One of the results of the campaign was this Spitfire pictured with members of the 609 West Riding Squadron.

The Duchess of Gloucester spearheaded ‘Women’s Day’ in Victoria Square and crowds outside Leeds Bus Station were fascinated by this Avro Anson.

Leeds dignitaries received a march past in front of the Town Hall and the Lord Mayor Miss V. B. Kitson showed off a total of over £6m.
