Leeds Rhinos back Hawksworth Wood charity to boost men’s mental health
A grassroots charity in one of Leeds’ most deprived areas has teamed up with Leeds Rhinos to help men struggling with their mental health.
BEAT LS5, based in Hawksworth Wood, is launching a new round of the Rhinos’ Offload programme, offering free weekly sessions aimed at boosting wellbeing, confidence and routes into work.

The initiative is looking for 10 men from across north and west Leeds to sign up ahead of its start later this month, with organisers hoping it will provide a lifeline for those out of work or battling isolation.
Hawksworth Wood was previously identified as one of the UK’s most disadvantaged communities under the National Lottery-backed Big Local scheme, with BEAT LS5 emerging from that project to continue supporting residents.

Sadie Oddy, founder and CEO of BEAT LS5, said: “Supporting men’s mental health at a local level is incredibly important.
“Many men still feel they have to struggle in silence, particularly when they are dealing with challenges around work, health or isolation.”
Now operating from its own community hub in the former YMCA building, the charity says the Offload programme will create a safe space for men to open up, connect with others and take positive steps forward.
Delivered over six sessions, the scheme uses the core values of rugby league - teamwork, resilience and support - to encourage participants to tackle challenges around mental health and employment.
Sam Horner, Rugby League Development Plan Manager and Mental Health Offload Lead, said: “Leeds Rhinos Foundation are pleased to be working with BEAT, an organisation in the heart of the community, which will build on the Offload programme we have been delivering over the past seven years.
‘The diverse groups we have delivered sessions to include 400 firefighters in Leeds, community groups, construction companies, community rugby league clubs and Aspire care worker staff.
“The impact of this delivery is evidential and powerful with such quotes like ‘These sessions have saved my husband’s life’, ‘I now understand that building resilience can support my struggles to get better’, and ‘The biggest bully in my life is my own mind and now I feel free, because of the coping strategies you have opened up to me’.”
The free course is open to Leeds men aged 16 and over who are currently out of work or unable to work due to health reasons, with sessions taking place at the charity’s Hawksworth Wood hub.
