‘Avoid the area’: Road closures as firefighters battle Marsden Moors blazes in West Yorkshire

Firefighters urged people to “avoid the area” as they battled fires on a moorland in West Yorkshire yesterday.

In two separate incidents, crews fought blazes on Marsden Moors on Tuesday (April 7) between Leeds and Manchester. Residents were warned of road closures being in place as well.

In a post on Facebook, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service wrote: “We are currently attending two moorland fires at Deer Hill and the Five Mile Post area.

“We are asking all members of the public to avoid the area. Anyone currently on the moors is advised to leave the area as soon as possible.

“Road closures are expected in surrounding areas whilst crews from across West Yorkshire respond to this wildfire.”

A further update yesterday (April 7) afternoon, the force added: “10 crews remain at both scenes on Marsden Moor, covering Deer Hill and the Five Mile Post areas, supported by specialist wildfire teams.

“Members of the public should continue to avoid the area and expect road closures in the surrounding area while crews work to bring both wildfires under control.”

The latest update came at 5.30pm and it said: “Crews from across West Yorkshire remain at both wildfire scenes, using blowers to dampen down and extinguish the moorland fires.”

In a separate update from the Redbrook Reservoir / Butterly Reservoir area of Marsden Moor, the fire service added: “Crews are still in attendance up on the moors from the large fire there yesterday.

“Crews are monitoring the flames that can be seen from miles around and will be looking to attack the fire again at first light this morning.”
