'I’m on a mission to find Britain’s best mixed grills - and it all started with a childhood treat'

The mixed grill was my childhood luxury - now I’m travelling the country to find its finest

Growing up on hearty meat and two veg, the classic mixed grill remains a nostalgic favourite.

We could only afford cheaper meats back then so it was a real treat going to the pub for steak and chips or better still a mixed grill.

It was a fat man’s dream containing lamb chops, a beef steak, sausages, gammon and often served with chips, half a grilled tomato and a fried egg.

Sometimes you also get sides of mushrooms, onion rings and peas.

These dishes, once a rare treat in childhoods shaped by budget cuts of meat, became a mainstay of pub menus, thanks in part to venues like Berni Inns -now Beefeater - bringing steaks and mixed grills to the masses.

Over time, the mixed grill has evolved, with a variety of styles now available. Indian-inspired versions, such as those at Sheepscar Bar and Grill in Leeds, offer a different take, while Estabulo is noted for its selection of quality meats carved at the table.

However, the landscape is changing. Affordable chains like Beefeater and Brewers Fayre are closing their doors.

When I’m travelling I tend to stay at a Premier Inn and I always enjoy the all you can eat breakfast at either pub, if I’m not reviewing that day because the breakfast fuels my family and I up for the entire day.

If I were to choose a chain pub for a mixed grill it would be Harvester although last time they kicked me out for filming.

With pubs struggling everywhere however, particularly independent gastro pubs, I want to showcase some of the best mixed grills nationwide.

My first stop is of course in Yorkshire, and I started my journey off at The Old Post Office in Barnsley.

I’m searching for more good old fashioned pubs who serve up incredible mixed grills.

Let me know where I should try @dannyvsfood mrandmrsyorkshire.com
