'I’ve reported on Leeds for almost 20 years, but the abuse of this 10-year-old left me disgusted'

‘I’ve spent 20 years in journalism, but I’ve never seen adults behave so disgracefully towards a child’

There are very few things in this job at the Yorkshire Evening Post that fail to surprise me.

After almost 20 years in local journalism I have seen the absolute best and worst in humanity.

From covering some of the biggest and most heinous court cases in Leeds through to celebrating the people that make our city so special, the job is varied to say the least.

It is always with great pride that we get the chance to showcase the brilliant work of our city’s youngest generation and their positive contribution towards their community.

But what followed about a story of a young person wanting to make a difference is nothing short of an absolute disgrace.

Never in a million years did I expect to read such vitriol and abuse levelled at a child on our Facebook page from adults.

I won’t repeat the absolutely abhorrent comments that were made towards a ten year old but what I will say is Rita Ann, Margaret Mccavera and David Bird you should all hang your heads in shame. I’ve kept the screenshots of your posts.

This is a ten year old child who is wanting to make a positive contribution to their city. Let that just sink in.

Social media has become a cess pit for keyboard warriors to spout vitriol without accountability.

The Yorkshire Evening Post will not stand for this despicable behaviour on our own platforms and we will be taking a no nonsense approach to anyone who thinks they can be abusive.

We will not be afraid to ban those who cross the line.

Our role is to champion debate but targeting a young child over comments about the colour of their skin is nothing short of disgusting.

So today we have a simple message.

Think before you comment, treat others as you would wish to be treated, and remember that freedom of expression does not give anyone the right to abuse others.

Respect costs nothing. Keep it respectful, or be prepared to face the consequences.
