Leeds readers reveal the one thing they think the city desperately needs - and it's not a surprise

Yorkshire Evening Post readers told us what the one thing Leeds needs - and it’s no surprise that transport came up

We asked our readers a simple question: what’s the one thing Leeds needs?

One theme came through loud and clear and that was to improve the city’s challenged transport network.

From calls for a rail link to Leeds Bradford Airport and a station at Elland Road, to a proper mass transit system, better roads and more walking and cycling routes, readers want a transport network that works better for the city.

Here’s what some of you had to say on the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Facebook page:

Kay Dunbar said : “A train line to the airport.”

Sean Marshall said: “A proper working road system and joined up public transport that works.”

Stephen West added: “ A railway line that connects to Leeds Bradford airport and a possible tram system like other big cities.”

Andy Brook said: “An Elland Road Railway Station. Been needed for years.”

Malcolm Wallis was straight to the point with his observation: “Roads you can drive on .”

Meanwhile James Bovington added: “Planning an underground rail network.”

Gary Dibnah said the city was missing out in comparison to others and said: “A metro mass transit system, similar to the ones in Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester.”

Phillip Mcintyre said an option could be to look at how to better link up Holbeck and added: “The Holbeck viaduct walking and cycling route people look it up a fantastic plan.”

Chris Quirke echoed earlier calls for better public transport around the home of Leeds United and said: “A mass transit system so the north stand can be redeveloped at Elland Road.”

Meanwhile Paul Drudkh Foster added there should be tighter regulations for delivery drivers in the city and said: “All bike delivery (take out) need to be registered with lights and number plate plus banned from wearing a balaclava.”

Meanwhile Stephen Whitters said the “buzz” of Leeds in the 60s and 70s is missing from the present day.

He added: “It needs the ‘buzz' it had in the 60s and 70s. It needs ordinary people with jobs and money to spend. Leeds had a fabulous variety of shops. A fabulous vibe and a life of its own. Bring it back.”

But for many readers, the answer to what Leeds needs is simple: a transport system fit for a growing city.
