YEP 135: 'The YEP is a great example of how regional news should be done'
Today as we mark 135 years of the Yorkshire Evening Post - we ask those across the city to tell us what the newspaper means to them.
Allan Leighton, Executive Chairman at Asda
“Congratulations to the Yorkshire Evening Post on reaching the incredible milestone of 135 years in publication.
“We're proud of our Yorkshire roots and join you in celebrating well over a century of informing and connecting the communities that Asda serves across Yorkshire.
“We look forward in continuing to share the incredible stories that celebrate all things Yorkshire and some of the amazing people in our communities.”
Leeds United Supporters' Trust
“For 135 years, the Yorkshire Evening Post has been the heartbeat of our city, consistently reporting the highs and lows of our football club as well as celebrating the triumphs that unite us.
“There's been plenty of heartbreak along the way, all told by some incredible journalists - many leaving a long lasting legacy.
“We thank the YEP for their incredible support in telling the stories of what we do from our Leeds Fans Foodbank, Murals and standing up for what is right for our fans.
“We continue on this journey with one thing in common, the love for our city and our football club. “

Chris Kamara, Leeds United legend
“Can I say a big well done to the YEP - 135 years. And can I say there are still people working there when it started 135 years ago! Only kidding, of course.
“When I first started at Leeds in 1990 they were sponsored by Topman but the following season the Yorkshire Evening Post took over the shirt sponsorship, games, jigsaws you name it they took over.
“And the YEP was a must get for the team report every Monday night. You would look through the report and they were so good to the players.
“Mind you they were doing so well at that time. Well done to everyone who is working there now.
Tommy McLoughlin, manager of Leeds Irish Centre
“I just want to congratulate the Yorkshire Evening Post on 135 years and I would like to thank them for their support in everything we have done at the Irish Centre and we wish you every success for the future.”
Terry George,
“Happy birthday Yorkshire Evening Post 135 years.
“I remember it being launched - I’m only joking. But I do remember being headline news at the age of 12.
“The YEP has always been an important news source for Leeds. Happy Birthday, keep going and let’s hope we have many more years.
Tony Dorigo, Leeds United legend
“Happy 135 birthday to the YEP.
“You’ll always hold a very special place in my heart because of course 1991-1992 the YEP was emblazoned across the front of our shirts and of course we went on to win the title.
“ Great memories and the Yorkshire Evening Post was certainly a part of that.”

Christine Talbot, broadcaster
“I want to wish the YEP a very happy 135th anniversary.
“As a regional news presenter I know the important that regional news plays in our communities and the Yorkshire Evening Post is a great example of how that should be done and long may that continue.”
Danny Malin, broadcaster and columnist
2I just want to say a massive happy, happy birthday to the Yorkshire Evening Post. 135 - that’s nearly as old as me.
“It’s been absolutely fantastic over the last few years working with the YEP.
“The YEP is class and is full of everything everyone wants to know about. And another 135 years to come.”
Jamie Jones Buchanan, Leeds Rhinos Chief Executive
“I just wanted to say a happy 135th birthday to the YEP.
“A massive storyteller within Leeds, West Yorkshire and the entire county of Yorkshire.
“I’ve got my own personal debt of gratitude for the opportunity it gave me in my younger years to write a column and start my own storytelling journey.”

Gary Hetherington, former chief executive of Leeds Rhinos
“Happy birthday to the YEP. What a great service you have provided, particularly to the rugby league followers of West Yorkshire.
“You’ve been our bible for so many years ever since the game started in fact. Long may that continue. Happy Birthday.”
Alastair Brownlee, triathlete
"Can't believe the YEP is 135 years old. Old git!!
“I've not been around for most of those 135 years but it seems to me that good, independent and local journalism has never been more important.
“Congrats to the institution that is the YEP and all involved."
The Mayor of Leeds, Coun Dan Cohen
“I just wanted to wish a huge happy birthday to the Yorkshire Evening Post. 135 years of serving our communities and making sure we always get the accurate up to date local news from a local perspective.
“Many thanks and here’s to the next 135 years.”

Coun James Lewis, Leader of Leeds City Council
“Happy birthday to the Yorkshire Evening Post. 135 years and still going strong.
“It’s been part of life in Leeds over that time. I know it’s changed over time. I remember when it was a broadsheet paper and I used to sell it to commuters out of the little shop at Leeds bus station back when I was at school and I know it has been a valuable source of information for Leeds over that time.
“It has helped us to celebrate great times and mark hard times in the city and it is a voice that people have relied on.”
Ed Whiting, Chief Executive of Leeds City Council
“Happy birthday Yorkshire Evening Post. You’ve been such a big part of our city over such a long time both physically in paper form and now as an app it’s the go to app on my phone.
“Holding us to account as a city council and telling us everything that is going on around the city and wider region. Thank you for all that you’re doing.
“You’ve been a big part of our history as a city as well. I remember doing work experience in the old building with the fantastic tower with the sign on top and watching as the whole city did with you on the front of everyone’s shirts through the 1991-92 season for Leeds United.
“Thank you for everything you have done for our city and here’s to many more years to come.”
