The current transmission rates of Covid-19 in Leeds are “above the national average” and, as a result, pupils are missing in-school learning while they have to isolate at home.

Coupled with the challenges of trying to get access to laptops or the space to help with their work while being away from the classrooms, the odds are stacking up against some of our most disadvantaged children.

Education chiefs worry that this perfect storm has left teachers “exhausted” and many poorer pupils even more disadvantaged.

This newspaper has said time and again, we can’t afford to fail our city’s children.

Someone needs to do the maths to make sure the odds aren’t stacked against our pupils from the very start.
